January 2: Signs of Perimenopause That Aren’t Hot Flashes
January 12, 2026
When people talk about perimenopause, hot flashes tend to steal the spotlight. But for many women, they aren’t the first — or even the most disruptive — symptom.
Perimenopause can affect nearly every system in the body. Emotional changes like increased anxiety, irritability, or low mood are common. Many women describe feeling more sensitive or reactive, even when life circumstances haven’t changed.
Sleep disturbances are another major indicator. You may fall asleep easily but wake in the early morning hours unable to rest again. This can happen even without night sweats and is often linked to cortisol and progesterone shifts.
Other lesser-known signs include brain fog, decreased stress tolerance, joint stiffness, changes in digestion, and feeling exhausted despite adequate rest. Periods may become heavier, lighter, closer together, or more unpredictable — but not always right away.
Because these symptoms don’t fit the stereotype of menopause, many women internalize them. They assume they’re failing at stress management or not trying hard enough to “stay healthy.”
At Hot Flash Yoga, we talk openly about these quieter signs — the ones that make you feel like you’re slowly losing your footing. Awareness brings relief. When you recognize patterns, you can choose practices that support your body rather than overwhelm it.
You’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone.
